THE LIVING CENTURY is a project that honors the lives of people over 100 years old. Each month, the organization presents a “Centenarian of the Month” award. They are also accepting entries for “The Living Century Awards” at www.TheLivingCentury.com. These awards will be announced on the web site at the end of the year. Other “Centenarian’s of the Month” are also listed on the site.
The other part of the project is a television series that profiles the lives of centenarians. Barbra Streisand and Cis Corman, president of Barwood Films, are executive producing the series with filmmakers Steven Latham, Christopher Carson, Nicholas Loeb, Tzvi Howard Small and Jeff Cohen. Emmy® and Academy Award® winning actor Jack Lemmon is hosting the program. There are 70,000 Americans who are at least 100 years old. By the year 2050, there will be 834,000. Each 30-minute episode of THE LIVING CENTURY profiles one person who has lived every day of the 20th Century. Their memories, their unique perceptions of the world and the radical changes they witnessed during their lifetime come alive through interviews, family photographs, home movies, archival footage and an original musical score.
The first two episodes of THE LIVING CENTURY currently airing on PBS throughout the country are:
“Three Miracles” features 107-year-old Rose Freedman of Los Angeles. She is the last remaining survivor of the infamous 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. “A Teacher and Student for Life” tells the story of 100-year-old Dr. Ray Crist, who was one of the main scientists in the development of the first atomic bomb.
