“Elvis Presley is such a musical icon, in all genres of music,” said Chris Parr, Vice President, Music and Talent, CMT. “There are so many country music artists, as well as country music fans, who have been influenced by and grown up listening to Elvis Presley. His music and influence had a great impact on country music, and CMT is excited to pay tribute to one of the most influential artists of our time.”
In 1998 Elvis Presley was inducted into the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame for his contributions to the genre of music he listened to as a young child. Elvis’ bronzed plaque that now hangs in the Country Music Hall of Fame, alongside such legends as Hank Williams, Hank Snow and Jimmie Rodgers, reiterates his lasting impact on country music. It reads:
Known worldwide as the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis' earliest ambition was to be a country music performer. After signing his first record deal with Sun Records in 1954, he released That's All Right, a song blending influences from country, gospel and the blues. Though some critics denounced his performances and musical style, Elvis became a prominent fixture in many major country shows of the time, including the Louisiana Hayride and the Big D Jamboree. From 1955 through 1958, Elvis racked up huge country and pop chart hits, including Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel, Hound Dog, and Love Me Tender, and his popularity continued to skyrocket. After his passing in 1977, Elvis' music continued to succeed on the country charts with several posthumous hits, including My Way and Unchained Melody. Sales of hundreds of millions of records around the world sealed his place as a musical icon who helped forge new territory for country music and forever change its course.”
