Clinical Trial to Evaluate Garlic Use in HIV-Infected Individuals; Study on Lowering Cholesterol During HAART Treatment Funded by NIH
Bastyr University, the nation's leading school for the study of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) will begin a clinical trial on the use of garlic in HIV-infected individuals on Feb. 5, 2001.

The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health and will be conducted at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health.

The study will be a double-blind randomized placebo controlled trial to test the use of garlic for 12 weeks to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in HIV-infected individuals who are being treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). HAART is a combination of anti-HIV drugs often referred to as a "cocktail." The garlic will be administered as enteric-coated tablets and in two escalating dosages.

HAART treatment is often accompanied by an increase in cholesterol and triglycerides, thus increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Clinical studies have previously shown that garlic has a moderate cholesterol lowering effect. An earlier epidemiological study conducted at Bastyr with NIH funding revealed that garlic is the most frequently used botanical medicine among HIV-infected men and women who utilize CAM therapies.

Principal Investigator for the study is Leanna Standish, N.D., Ph.D., L.Ac. Collaborating is Scott Weigle, M.D., from the University of Washington, an endocrinologist at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Jose Berger, M.F. from Bastyr University is also a member of the investigator team. Individuals interested in participating in the study should call 206/834-4146 for further information.

Bastyr University Research Institute

A pioneer in CAM research, the Bastyr University Research Institute utilizes epidemiological and basic science studies and clinical trials. Collaborating with conventional research agencies and the natural products industry, the Research Institute has further increased the potential of research findings in naturopathic medicine. To date, over 40 studies have been completed or are underway in a variety of areas including botanical, homeopathic and nutritional medicine. Funding sources include government and foundation grants, contracts and generous donations. Several proposals for future research activities are being developed.
