AROLYN L. OAKLEY NAMED HHS REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR SEATTLE AREA

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced the appointment of Carolyn L. Oakley as the Secretary's Regional Representative for Region X, based in Seattle.

In her new role, Oakley will serve as the Secretary's direct representative responsible for the guidance and coordination of HHS policies and programs in the region. The area includes the states of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

"Carolyn Oakley brings a long career of dedicated public service and is extremely knowledgeable about programs in the region," Secretary Thompson said. "Her expertise as a former state legislator, as well as her reach in the civic community, makes her an excellent choice to guide public health efforts in the Pacific Northwest."

For 10 years, Oakley served as the 36th District State Representative in the Oregon House of Representatives. She has served as Majority Whip, Assistant Majority Leader and Floor Leader, and chaired the Joint Ways and Means Education Committee, House Education Committee, and the Special Committee on Sexual Harassment.

Oakley was born and raised in Portland, Ore., and graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in elementary education. She also owns a farm and machinery business.

Oakley has held executive and leadership positions with the National Conference of State Legislators, American Legislative Exchange Council, Education Commission of the States, National Order of Women Legislators, and Women in Government.

She assumes the Regional Representative position today.
