Attorney General Jim Hood Intervenes in Charity Hospital Case

Attorney General Jim Hood Intervenes in Charity Hospital Case
Attorney General Hood stated, "I am proud of the progressive steps taken by the Board of Directors of North Mississippi Health Services to ensure that our uninsured citizens, many of whom work, are not charged more than people with insurance. Thousands of uninsured people from my home area, who make less than $18,000 per year (200 percent of poverty level), will now receive complete charity care. We, the taxpayers of Mississippi, allow nonprofit hospitals to have tax-free status in exchange for them adhering to their charitable mission. With this settlement NMHS has reconfirmed its commitment to its charitable mission by providing charity care to all who are entitled to the same. I intervened as Attorney General for three reasons. The first was to insure that all uninsured Mississippi consumers who paid more than others during the last three years receive a refund. The second was to see that the uninsured receives charity benefits consistent with a non-profit hospital's charitable mission. The third is to make sure that the nonprofit hospitals continue to have sufficient capital to provide the best care to all Mississippians.

"The settlement agreement will ensure that uninsured patients of the NMHS and its affiliates North Mississippi Medical Center, Clay County Medical Corporation, Marion Regional Medical Center Inc., Pontotoc Health Services, Inc., Tishomingo Health Services, Inc., Webster Health Services, Inc., and North Mississippi Medical Clinics, Inc., will receive free care and discounted care, based on their household income. I applaud the efforts of NMHS in this regard.

"It speaks well of my home region that our North Mississippi Health Services is the first hospital in the nation to ensure that its charitable policies benefit all of its uninsured patients. I will be working with other hospitals in Mississippi to facilitate these reforms," said Attorney General Hood.
